Test Your Microphone Online

The Online Microphone Test checks whether your browser can access a microphone, confirms that the selected device is receiving sound, and provides live feedback while you speak.

After permission is granted, the tool displays a real-time waveform, relative input meter, peak level, average level, microphone details, and browser audio-processing settings. You can also record a sample for up to 30 seconds and play it back locally to hear how the microphone sounds.

The plugin processes microphone input inside your browser. It does not upload the audio or provide a recording download.

How to Use the Online Microphone Test

Choose Your Microphone

Use the Microphone device menu to select an available input. This may include a laptop microphone, USB microphone, webcam microphone, Bluetooth headset, or audio interface.

Device names may not appear until you grant microphone permission. Browsers can restrict device labels before access is approved for privacy reasons. The Refresh devices button updates the list when you connect or disconnect hardware.

Before starting, choose whether to request these browser-processing options:

These settings are requests sent to the browser. The microphone details section later shows whether each setting was reported as enabled, disabled, or not reported.

Start the Test

  1. Select your microphone.
  2. Choose the processing settings.
  3. Click Start microphone test.
  4. Select Allow when the browser requests microphone access.
  5. Speak normally while watching the meter and waveform.
  6. Click Stop test when finished.

Browser microphone access normally requires a secure HTTPS page or localhost. The browser uses getUserMedia() to request permission and provide the page with an audio stream.

The Permission Status and Connection Status panels show whether access is being requested, granted, denied, connected, or disconnected.

Understanding the Microphone Results

Live Input Level

The live meter shows the relative strength of the signal received from the microphone. Its scale runs from 0% to 100%, with a marked recommended speaking area.

This percentage is not a calibrated decibel or dB SPL measurement. It is a browser-based representation derived from the amplitude of the incoming digital audio samples.

A higher reading means the captured signal is stronger. It does not automatically mean the microphone sounds better.

Peak Level vs. Average Level

The peak level remains at the highest detected value until the test is restarted or reset. The average changes as more audio frames are analyzed.

For a useful comparison between microphones, keep your speaking distance, voice level, and test duration similar.

Input Status Messages

The tool interprets the live signal using internal relative thresholds:

  • No clear microphone input detected: the signal has remained extremely low for a sustained period.
  • Input level is low: sound is present, but its measured RMS amplitude remains below the plugin’s preferred range.
  • Input level looks good: the signal is above the low-input threshold without reaching the clipping threshold.
  • Input may be clipping: at least one sample has reached approximately 92% of the maximum digital amplitude.

A clipping warning indicates that the signal may distort. Move farther from the microphone or reduce the input gain in your operating system, audio interface, or microphone software.

These labels are practical diagnostics, not calibrated studio measurements.

Live Waveform

The waveform displays changes in audio amplitude over time. When you speak, the line should move around its center position.

A nearly flat line can indicate silence, a muted microphone, the wrong input device, denied permission, or very low system gain.

The waveform does not show pitch, frequency response, a frequency spectrum, background-noise score, or voice quality. Competing microphone tests often use waveform movement as their main working/not-working indicator, but waveform movement alone cannot determine overall recording quality.

Record and Hear Your Microphone

Start the microphone test before selecting Record sample. The recording timer begins at 00:00 and automatically stops at 30 seconds.

After recording, use the audio player to hear the captured sample. The playback-volume slider affects only the recording playback; it does not change microphone input gain.

Listen for:

  • Clear and understandable speech
  • Background hum or fan noise
  • Popping on consonants
  • Excessive room echo
  • Dropouts or interruptions
  • Audible distortion on louder words

The recording is created through the browser’s MediaRecorder API, which records the active media stream and makes it available for local playback.

Use Clear recording to remove the current temporary sample. The plugin does not include an audio-download button.

A result of Not reported does not mean the feature is broken. It means the browser, operating system, driver, or device did not expose that value.

Troubleshooting Microphone Problems

Permission Denied

Select the permission icon near the browser address bar and change microphone access to Allow. In Chrome, microphone permissions and the default input can also be managed under Settings, Privacy and security, Site settings, and Microphone.

Also confirm that your operating system allows the browser to use the microphone.

No Signal or Low Input

Check that:

  • The correct microphone is selected
  • A headset or hardware mute switch is off
  • The operating-system input level is high enough
  • Another application is not blocking the device
  • The microphone is close enough to your voice
  • USB or audio-interface cables are connected

Refresh the device list after connecting new hardware.

Clipping or Distortion

Move slightly farther from the microphone and reduce input gain. Do not judge clipping from average level alone; a brief loud consonant can produce a high peak even when the average appears moderate.

Privacy and Limitations

The plugin processes the live signal and temporary recording locally in the browser. Session history stores only text results such as the device name, peak level, average level, and test time.

The tool does not measure calibrated decibels, microphone frequency response, latency, distortion percentage, pitch, speech intelligibility, or background-noise level. It does not transcribe speech or assign an audio-quality score.

Common Microphone Testing Mistakes

Avoid comparing two devices while changing your distance or speaking volume. That produces an unreliable comparison.

Do not assume a moving waveform means the recording is clear. Always use sample playback to check the actual sound.

Do not treat a 50% meter result as a fixed real-world loudness level. Browser input percentages vary with the microphone, driver, operating system, hardware gain, and processing settings.

The tool shows “Input may be clipping” when the digital signal approaches its maximum amplitude. Reduce gain or increase your distance from the microphone.

Yes. This plugin processes audio in the browser and creates recordings for local playback. It does not upload microphone audio.
