Test Your Pitch Accuracy Online

The Pitch Accuracy Test plays a randomized target note, listens through your microphone, and measures how closely your sung pitch matches the target.

Each round shows the target note and frequency, your detected note and measured frequency, cents deviation, flat/accurate/sharp feedback, pitch confidence, input level, and a live tuning needle. A round is scored only after the tool detects a sufficiently stable version of the exact target note.

The test processes microphone audio locally in your browser. It does not upload recordings, analyze songs, measure vocal range, or grade tone quality.

How to Use the Pitch Accuracy Test

Hear and Match Each Target

  1. Select Start test.
  2. Listen to the target note, which plays automatically.
  3. Use Replay target when necessary.
  4. Select Sing now.
  5. Sustain the displayed target note.
  6. Hold it until the tool detects a stable result.
  7. Review the cents deviation and round score.
  8. Select Next round.

The Space key starts or stops listening, R replays the target, and Enter advances after a scored round.

Difficulty Levels and Scoring Tolerance

Difficulty changes the number of cents you may deviate while still receiving a match.

A result of +12 cents matches on Easy and Medium, but not on Hard.

Difficulty does not change how the microphone pitch is detected. It changes only the matching threshold and the point at which the result is labeled flat, accurate, or sharp.

Target-Note Ranges

The target range controls which notes can be selected:

These are test ranges, not voice-type classifications. Selecting β€œHigh voice range” does not determine whether someone is a soprano, tenor, or another vocal category.

Understanding the Live Results

Target Note and Detected Note

The target displays a note name, octave, and calculated frequency.

The detected note is the nearest equal-tempered note to the microphone frequency. For a round to become stable, the detected note must match the exact target note and octave.

This matters because singing an adjacent note steadily does not count as matching the target, even if that adjacent note itself is well tuned.

Cents Deviation

Cents measure the distance between your sung frequency and the target frequency.

  • Negative cents mean you are flat.
  • Positive cents mean you are sharp.
  • Zero cents means the measured frequency equals the target.

The tuning needle displays a range from βˆ’50 to +50 cents. If the numerical deviation is larger, the needle stays at the edge while the cents value continues to show the actual calculated result.

Confidence and Input Level

Pitch confidence estimates how strongly the waveform behaves like a repeating periodic signal. The plugin analyzes a result only when confidence exceeds 50%.

Input level is a relative digital percentage, not a calibrated decibel measurement.

A low input can fall below the noise gate. A noisy room can produce unstable detections. Use:

  • Low sensitivity for quieter voices
  • Medium sensitivity for normal conditions
  • High sensitivity when background noise triggers false readings

Stable-Note Requirement

The plugin does not score the first pitch estimate it receives.

It waits until:

  • The detected note equals the target note
  • Consecutive cents readings vary by less than six cents
  • This consistency continues for eight analysis frames

This reduces scoring from brief pitch slides, consonants, noise, or unstable note attacks.

How the Pitch Detection Works

The target frequency is calculated using equal temperament and the selected A4 calibration.

For microphone analysis, the plugin:

  1. Requests an audio stream from the selected microphone.
  2. Requests echo cancellation, noise suppression, and automatic gain control as disabled.
  3. Reads time-domain samples through the Web Audio API.
  4. Uses autocorrelation to find a repeating waveform period.
  5. Converts that period into frequency.
  6. Converts the frequency into the nearest note and octave.
  7. Compares the measured frequency directly with the target frequency in cents.

The analysis range is approximately 60–1,200 Hz.

Understanding Your Final Results

Overall Accuracy

Overall accuracy is:

The displayed result is rounded to a whole percentage.

A 70% result on Easy and a 70% result on Hard do not represent the same tolerance. Keep difficulty consistent when comparing attempts.

Average Absolute Cents Error

The test takes the absolute cents deviation from every scored round and averages those values.

A result of βˆ’20 cents and +20 cents both contribute 20 cents of error. This makes the metric describe average distance from the target rather than whether you tend to sing sharp or flat.

Average Response Time

Response time starts when the round is created and ends when the stable result is scored.

It includes:

  • Hearing the initial target
  • Replaying the target
  • Preparing to sing
  • Starting microphone listening
  • Holding the note until stable detection

It is therefore a complete round-response measure, not only the time spent vocalizing.

Streaks and Per-Note Results

The current streak increases after each matched round and resets after a miss. Best streak stores the longest sequence of matches.

The per-note table groups results by exact note and octave. It shows attempts, matches, and accuracy for each target that appeared.

Strongest and weakest notes are based on match percentage. When percentages are tied, the number of attempts is used as a secondary comparison.

How to Get a More Reliable Result

Use headphones so the reference tone does not enter the microphone.

Keep the microphone at a consistent distance and sustain a steady vowel such as β€œah.” Avoid judging the result during the initial slide into the note.

Choose a comfortable target range. If notes are repeatedly outside your usable register, range difficulty may affect the result more than pitch-matching skill.

For progress tracking, use the same difficulty, note range, microphone, and A4 calibration across sessions. Longer 20- or 30-round tests provide more note-specific evidence than a single short attempt.

Pitch Accuracy Is Not Vocal Range or Singing Quality

Pitch accuracy measures how closely a sustained note matches a target frequency.

Vocal range measures the lowest and highest notes a person can produce usefully. This plugin does not calculate vocal range.

It also does not score breath support, resonance, diction, rhythm, expression, tone quality, or complete-song performance. A close cents result shows accurate single-note matching under the test conditions, not overall singing ability.
