Deep Voice Test
The Deep Voice Test measures the lowest stable fundamental frequency detected from your microphone. It reports the result in Hertz, converts it to the nearest musical note, assigns a voice-depth category, and shows how reliable the recording was.
Unlike a vocal range test, it does not ask you to find both your highest and lowest notes. It focuses on the lower end of your voice and filters out brief, unstable readings that could make the result appear deeper than the sound you actually sustained.
Audio is analyzed locally in your browser. The tool does not upload or save your microphone recording.
How to Use the Deep Voice Test
- Choose Lowest sung note or Speaking voice.
- Select a reference profile.
- Use Calibrate room noise when your surroundings are not completely quiet.
- Select Start test and allow microphone access.
- Hold a comfortable, steady “ah” sound.
- Continue for at least two seconds, then select Finish test.
- Review the lowest pitch, average pitch, musical note, category, confidence, duration, and signal quality.
Keep the microphone approximately 15–30 cm from your mouth. Use a normal chest-voice sound rather than pushing your voice downward.

The mode changes the upper frequency limit used by the analyzer. It does not change the final depth-category boundaries.
The reference profile is a comparison preference in the interface. It does not alter the pitch-detection formula or the category thresholds.
What Does a Deep Voice Test Measure?
A deep voice test measures vocal pitch, expressed as frequency in Hertz. One Hertz represents one waveform cycle per second. A lower detected frequency corresponds to a lower pitch.
The value being estimated is the fundamental frequency, often called F0. It represents the repeating rate of the voiced waveform rather than the loudness of the sound.
This distinction matters:
- Pitch describes how high or low a sound is.
- Loudness describes its perceived strength.
- Vocal range spans a person’s usable lowest and highest notes.
- Timbre and resonance affect the character or color of a voice.
This tool measures pitch depth. It does not score loudness, resonance, attractiveness, singing ability, or a complete vocal range.
How the Pitch Analysis Works
The browser reads time-domain waveform samples from the microphone through the Web Audio API. An AnalyserNode can supply these real-time waveform values for browser-side processing and visualization.
The plugin then performs these steps:
- It measures the input level.
- It rejects signals below the minimum loudness and noise thresholds.
- It uses autocorrelation to search for a repeating waveform period.
- It converts that period into frequency.
- It rejects detections below the required clarity level.
- It checks large jumps for possible half-frequency or double-frequency errors.
- It retains samples that remain close to the central detected pitch.
Autocorrelation is useful for detecting periodic signals, but pitch detectors can confuse a fundamental with one of its harmonics or subharmonics. That is why this tool checks abrupt changes for likely octave-related errors instead of accepting every frame unchanged.
Why You Must Hold the Sound Steadily
A single unusually low frame is not enough to produce a result. The plugin first finds the median of the captured pitches and removes samples more than 85 cents away from that central value.
One semitone equals 100 cents, so this filter keeps samples within slightly less than one semitone of the median.
The retained audio must span at least two seconds. Otherwise, the tool reports that there was not enough stable audio.
How the Final Frequencies Are Calculated
The tool produces two different frequency results:

Using the median of the lowest group reduces the influence of one accidental dip. This makes the lowest stable pitch more useful than simply displaying the smallest number detected during the test.
How to Read Your Results
Lowest Stable Pitch
This is the main deep voice test result. It is displayed in Hz and represents the reliably sustained lower portion of the recording.
Lower numbers indicate lower detected pitches, but they should only be compared when tests were performed in similar conditions.
Average Stable Pitch
The average stable pitch includes every retained sample. It may be slightly higher than the lowest stable result because natural voices fluctuate while a note or vowel is held.
A large difference between the two values can indicate that the pitch moved during the test.
Musical Note and Cents
The measured frequency is converted to the nearest equal-tempered musical note using A4 at 440 Hz as the reference.
The cents value shows how far the measurement is from that note:
- A positive value is above the note.
- A negative value is below it.
- A value near zero is close to the note’s standard frequency.
The note is useful for musical context, but the Hz value remains the direct measurement of vocal depth.
Voice Depth Category
The plugin uses these descriptive ranges:

These are tool-specific frequency labels. They are not formal classical voice classifications.
A singer’s formal voice type also depends on factors this test does not measure, including usable range, comfortable tessitura, tone, projection, and register transitions. A low result therefore does not automatically make someone a classical bass or baritone.
Confidence and Signal Quality
The confidence percentage summarizes the quality of the captured test. It combines:
- Pitch stability: 48%
- Signal clarity: 27%
- Proportion of retained samples: 15%
- Signal strength: 10%

Confidence describes the reliability of the recording—not the quality, appeal, or health of your voice.
Why Room-Noise Calibration Matters
Room-noise calibration listens briefly while you remain quiet and establishes a local noise floor. During the test, the signal must exceed either the plugin’s fixed minimum input threshold or the calibrated noise floor multiplied by 2.2.
Calibration is useful when a fan, computer, air conditioner, traffic, or distant conversation is present. It helps prevent background sound from being treated as a usable vocal signal.
Calibration cannot remove every kind of noise. For the most consistent result, use the same device, browser, microphone distance, room, and vocal technique each time.
Common Deep Voice Test Misconceptions
The lowest possible sound is always the best result.
A forced grunt, irregular creak, or momentary drop is less useful than a comfortable sound held steadily. The plugin is designed to favor sustained readings.
A deeper pitch means a louder or more powerful voice.
Pitch and loudness are different acoustic properties. A quiet sound can be low, and a loud sound can be high.
The result shows your full vocal range.
It does not. A vocal range test measures both low and high limits, while this tool analyzes one sustained low or speaking sound.
The category determines your formal voice type.
The labels describe measured frequency bands only. They do not replace assessment by a qualified vocal teacher or clinician.
A low-frequency result proves that a voice is healthy.
The tool is an acoustic estimator, not a medical test. It does not diagnose vocal strain, injury, or other conditions.

Avoid lowering the larynx forcefully or continuing when the sound feels uncomfortable. The goal is your lowest comfortable, repeatable pitch—not the lowest noise you can produce once.
Privacy, History, and Result Controls
Microphone audio is processed on the device and is not uploaded by the plugin. Browser-based pitch tools commonly use local Web Audio processing for this kind of real-time measurement.
The tool stores up to eight recent results in sessionStorage. This history lasts for the browser session rather than becoming a permanent voice record.
Use:
