Alto and contralto are not quite the same thing. Contralto is a voice type: the lowest female classical voice, usually about F3–F5 (175–698 Hz), with a dark, rich tone.
Alto is mostly a choir part: the lower female line in SATB music, usually written around F3–D5. Contraltos almost always sing alto, but many altos are really mezzo-sopranos. Compare the two ranges and check where your voice fits:
Alto or Contralto? Compare Your Range
Typical ranges: Contralto F3–F5, Alto F3–D5. They share 22 notes (F3–D5), so range alone rarely decides. Choose your lowest and highest comfortable notes to see which fits you.
- Contralto F3–F5 · 175 Hz–698 HzLowest female voice; dark and rich
- Alto F3–D5 · 175 Hz–587 HzLower female choir part in SATB music
Typical classical ranges; many voices go beyond them. Range is one part of voice type: tone colour, tessitura and where your voice changes register matter too.

Is Contralto the Same as Alto?
Not exactly. People often use the words as synonyms, and in everyday speech that’s fine. Strictly, though, contralto describes a voice and alto describes a part. It’s like the difference between “baritone” and “bass line”: a contralto is always suited to the alto part, but singing alto doesn’t make you a contralto. Most women in a choir’s alto section are mezzo-sopranos with a comfortable low range.
Is Contralto Lower Than Alto?
Usually, yes. A true contralto sits lower and sounds darker than the typical alto singer, with a full chest voice down to F3, E3 or lower. The written alto part rarely goes below F3 or above D5, and a contralto can sing all of it. Many contraltos also go higher than the alto part, up to F5 or beyond.
Alto vs Contralto Range
The contralto voice type is usually given as F3–F5, two octaves. The alto choir part is written in a narrower band, about F3–D5, so that most lower female voices can sing it. Compare all the female voices on the vocal range chart or in female vocal ranges. You can also see the notes for each choir part in SATB vocal ranges.
Alto vs Contralto Tessitura and Sound
A contralto’s tessitura, where the voice is happiest for long phrases, sits low: around A3–C5. The chest voice is strong, and the tone is heavy and dark, sometimes mistaken for a tenor on recordings. An alto section’s sound depends on who’s in it. With mostly mezzos it sounds warmer and lighter than a true contralto.
Alto vs Contralto vs Mezzo-Soprano
| Term | What it describes | Usual range |
|---|---|---|
| Mezzo-soprano | Middle female voice type | A3–A5 |
| Contralto | Lowest female voice type | F3–F5 |
| Alto | Lower female choir part | About F3–D5 |

How Rare Is a Contralto?
True contraltos are generally considered the rarest female voice type. Most women with low voices turn out to be mezzo-sopranos. That’s why classical contralto roles are few, and why many singers first called contraltos are later reclassified. In pop and folk, “contralto” is used more loosely for any low, dark female voice.
How to Tell If You’re a Contralto
- Your chest voice feels strong and natural down to about F3, and often E3 or lower.
- Singing around C5–E5 for long phrases tires you, even though you may reach higher.
- People say your speaking voice is low, and your singing tone is dark and rich.
- Songs usually feel better when you take them down a few semitones.
- Your range fits contralto in the tool above or the voice type test.
If most of these match, contralto is likely. If your low notes fade below A3 but your middle is warm, you’re probably a mezzo-soprano who sings alto.
Can Contraltos Sing High Notes?
Yes. Most contraltos can reach F5 and many go higher in head voice. Their high notes just aren’t where the voice is most comfortable. For safe ways to build range, see how to extend your upper range.
Famous Contraltos
Singers often described as contraltos include Tracy Chapman and Karen Carpenter (see Tracy Chapman’s vocal range). Amy Winehouse is usually described as a contralto or a low mezzo (see Amy Winehouse’s vocal range).
Types of Contralto and Alto
| Label | What it means |
|---|---|
| Lyric contralto | A lighter contralto with a warm, flexible sound |
| Dramatic contralto | A heavy, dark contralto with a powerful low range (very rare) |
| Alto 1 (first alto) | The higher alto line when the section is split; often mezzo-sopranos |
| Alto 2 (second alto) | The lower alto line; usually the lowest female voices, including contraltos |
| Countertenor alto | A man singing the alto part in head voice or falsetto |
In the classical Fach system, contralto is a voice category. “Alto” is not a Fach at all: it’s where you sing in the choir.
Does Your Speaking Voice Give a Clue?
A little. Your speaking pitch usually sits in the lower part of your singing range, so a lower speaking voice often goes with a lower voice type. Adult men typically speak at about 90–155 Hz, and women at about 165–255 Hz. You can measure yours with the voice Hz test. It’s only a clue, though: plenty of singers with low speaking voices turn out to have high singing voices. Many contraltos speak noticeably lower than average for women, sometimes below 165 Hz, but a low speaking voice alone doesn’t make you a contralto.
Why the Alto Part Doesn’t Show Your Voice Type
Choir directors put singers where the section needs them, not only where their voices fit. A mezzo-soprano with a good ear may be moved to alto to strengthen the harmony, and a young soprano may sing alto because she reads music well. Singing alto for years says a lot about your musicianship, but only a little about your voice type. To find your actual voice type, look at your comfortable range, your tone and where your voice changes gear.
Common Mistakes When Choosing Between Alto and Contralto
- Judging by your lowest or highest note. Extremes change from day to day. Your comfortable range and tessitura are far more reliable.
- Testing cold. An unwarmed voice loses several notes at the top. Warm up for five minutes first.
- Counting falsetto or vocal fry. Falsetto can add an octave at the top and fry can add notes at the bottom, but neither shows your voice type.
- Copying a singer on a recording. Songs are often transposed, and a singer you think is “low” may simply be singing in a comfortable key.
- Deciding once and for all. Voices change with training and age, especially in your teens and twenties. Check again after a few months of practice.
Choosing Song Keys for Your Voice
Once you know your voice type, choose keys that keep the song in your comfortable zone rather than your limits. If the chorus sits too high or too low, move the whole song a few semitones. The song key finder helps you pick one, and the vocal range calculator shows how many notes you have to work with.
